One online job gets searched more than every other one on my list put together. It’s virtual assistant — and almost nobody explains what it actually is.

So here’s the plain version. A virtual assistant does the admin a small business owner has no time for. Email. Scheduling. Invoices. Chasing people who don’t reply. Tidying spreadsheets. Booking things.

That’s it. There’s no certificate. There’s no software you must own. If you’ve run a household calendar, you have done a version of this job — badly paid and unacknowledged, but you’ve done it.

Step 1 — Pick two things you’ll do, not twenty

The biggest mistake beginners make is offering everything. It feels generous. It reads as “I have never done this before”.

Pick two. Inbox management and calendar management. Or invoicing and client follow-up. Two things you can describe in one sentence each.

Narrow is easier to hire. A business owner drowning in email is looking for an inbox person, not a general helper.

Step 2 — Make one page that proves you can do them

You don’t need clients to have a portfolio. You need evidence.

• Write a one-page document showing how you’d set up someone’s inbox — folders, rules, a daily routine.

• Build a sample weekly schedule for a made-up business owner with three meetings and a deadline.

• Screenshot a spreadsheet you’ve tidied. Blank out anything private.

Three pieces. One afternoon. That’s a portfolio, and it’s better than most people’s.

Step 3 — Go where the work is and say the specific thing

Freelance platforms, small-business Facebook groups, and the “we’re hiring” posts on LinkedIn. Not job boards for full-time roles.

Then send something short that names the problem, not your life story:

“I saw you mentioned your inbox is out of control. I set up inbox systems for small businesses — here’s a one-page example of how I’d approach yours. Happy to do a paid trial week if it’s useful.”

Three sentences. Specific problem, specific proof, low-risk offer. That’s the whole pitch.

What it pays, honestly

Beginner VA work commonly starts around $15–$30 an hour depending heavily on where your client is, and rises quickly once you specialize.

General admin pays the least. The moment you attach it to something with money in it — invoicing, bookkeeping, client onboarding — the rate goes up, because now you’re touching the part of the business that hurts.

Why this is the door I’d point most people at

• You already have the skills. Not “transferable skills” in the vague way people mean it — the literal tasks are ones you do weekly.

• You start at a real rate. Unlike survey work, it’s paid like work from the first day.

• It leads somewhere. VAs become bookkeepers, project managers, operations people. It’s a first rung, not a dead end.

Fourteen thousand eight hundred mothers a month typing the same phrase into a search box. All of them looking. Very few of them getting a straight answer.

The one thing to do this week

These three come up every time someone searches “virtual assistant” for the first time — so let’s clear them before you reply with your two.

What are the best platforms for virtual assistant jobs for mums?

The big general freelance marketplaces are where most people start, and there are VA-specific agencies that place people directly. Check three things before you spend time on any of them: does it accept your country, how does it pay out, and what does it charge you. Country availability is the one that catches everybody out.

Do I need a certificate or a course to be a VA?

No. No client has ever asked me for one. A course can shortcut the “what do I even offer” stage, which is real value — but nobody will hire or reject you over a certificate. A one-page work sample beats it every time.

How many hours a week does VA work take?

Most beginner arrangements are five to ten hours a week, and plenty are asynchronous — you do the work when you can, not at fixed times. Ask about that in the first conversation. It’s the single biggest difference between a job that fits around children and one that doesn’t.

The most-searched version of this question in three different countries is the same one: how do I start without spending anything?

Fair question. Honest answer: you can. The list is far shorter than the internet wants you to believe.

What you genuinely need

• A device that connects to the internet. A phone is enough to start. Harder than a laptop. Not impossible.
• An email address that looks like a person. Your name, not a nickname from 2009. Free, five minutes, and it changes how your applications read.
• Somewhere to put your samples. A free cloud folder with a shareable link. That is a portfolio. It does not need to be a website.
• A way to get paid. Sort this first, not last. Whatever works in your country — just check it accepts money from abroad before you need it to.
• Two hours a week you can protect. Not find. Protect. The difference between those two words is most of the game.

That’s it. Five things, four of them free.

What you don’t need, whatever you’ve been told

• A course. Not to start. Buy one later, with money you earned, when you’ve found a specific gap.
• A website. A shared folder does the same job for the first year.
• Design software, a logo, a business name. All of it is procrastination wearing a productive hat. I know, because I did every single one of these before I earned a shilling.
• A separate business account, at first. Useful once money comes in regularly. Not a starting requirement.

The one thing worth paying for, when you have it

Data. Not tools, not courses — connection. If you’re working off a phone on limited data, that’s the constraint that costs you work, and it’s the one to solve first.

My own day one was a secondhand laptop, a data bundle I was rationing, and one folder in cloud storage called “samples” that had two things in it. No logo. No website. No business name for another eight months.

Why starting free matters more than it sounds

• It removes the excuse. If the barrier is money, you’ll wait for money. Remove the barrier and the only thing left is starting, which is uncomfortable in a much more useful way.
• It protects you. Anyone telling you it takes money to begin is usually the one asking for the money.
• It fixes the order. Earn, then invest. Every time you do it the other way round, you’re gambling with money you needed.

Sell time and skill rather than products. Writing, admin support, tutoring, customer service and data work all need nothing up front. Anything needing stock, ads or a subscription needs capital and those are the models that turn “no investment” searches into disappointment.

How do I make money online with a very small amount?

Spend it on data. That’s genuinely the highest-return use of a small starting amount: it buys you the hours to send pitches and deliver a first job. Everything else can wait until something has come in.

Can I really do this from a phone?

Yes for writing, admin, customer support, tutoring and social media work. Harder for anything heavy on spreadsheets or design. Start with what the phone does well and upgrade the equipment out of earnings, not before them.

I searched “side hustles for stay-at-home mums” and watched what Google offered me next. Within two clicks it was suggesting I turn $1,000 into $10,000 in a month.

I want to show you exactly what happened, because it isn’t about me. It’s happening in your search results too, right now, and it’s quietly wrecking how you feel about your own progress.

What Google actually put in front of me

I started with a completely ordinary search. These were among the questions it suggested:

• How to make $10,000 a month side hustle?
• How to make $500 a day side hustle?
• How can I turn 10K into 100K quickly?
• How to turn $1,000 into $10,000 in one month?
• What jobs pay $4,000 a week without a degree?

I searched for none of those. I searched for part-time work. Three clicks later I’m being asked how to multiply money I don’t have.

Why it happens, and why it isn’t personal

Search engines show you what gets clicked, and enormous numbers get clicked. Nobody sat in a meeting and decided to do this to mothers looking for work. It’s a machine that rewards the biggest number in the room, and the biggest number is always the least honest one.

But look at the effect. You start out hopeful about earning $500 a month. Ten minutes later you feel behind, because apparently other people are making $500 a day. Nothing about your actual situation has changed. Only what you were shown.

Three reasons I won’t write those numbers

• They’re not achievable the way they’re implied. People do earn $500 a day. Not in month one, not without capital or years of skill, and almost never doing the things those articles list.
• They make real progress feel like failure. Your first $200 month is an achievement. Next to a $10,000 headline it feels like nothing. That comparison is the actual damage — not the wasted time, the discouragement.
• Anything that multiplies money that fast is a bet, not work. Turning $1,000 into $10,000 in a month is speculation. It might be somebody’s business. It is not a side hustle, and it should never be your grocery money.

I’ll admit my own version. I once spent about three weeks of evenings on survey and micro-task sites because the promise was “earn while the kids sleep”. I made less in the whole three weeks than one hour of proper client work pays me now. The money wasn’t really a loss.

The loss was that I came out of it believing online work was a con — and stopped looking for eight months.

So here’s my position, and I want you to hold me to it. The number I’ll keep writing about is $500 a month — around, depending on where you’re reading this. It’s unglamorous. It’s also the amount that changes a household, and unlike the other numbers, it’s real.

If you ever see a get-rich headline from me, assume my account’s been hacked.

The one thing to do this week

Next time you search, scroll past the suggestions and just notice what’s being offered to you. Then reply and tell me the wildest thing Google has put in front of you. I’ll publish the best ones — the collection is genuinely funny and slightly horrifying.

These three land in my replies more than any other — so here they are, plainly, like always.

Can I make $100 a day using my phone?

Not reliably from apps and surveys — the maths doesn’t work. You can absolutely run real client work from a phone: writing, admin, customer support are all doable. The phone isn’t the limit. The kind of work is.

Which app pays real money immediately?

Instant-payout apps exist and mostly pay very small amounts for surveys and micro-tasks. “Immediately” is the word doing the work in that sentence — it’s about speed, not amount. Useful for a few pounds this week; not a plan for next year.

Can ChatGPT make me money?

Not on its own. It makes work you can already do faster: drafting, summarizing, organizing. The people earning from AI are selling a service that uses it, not asking a chatbot for a plan. That’s a whole issue of its own, and it’s coming at the end of this month.

One more thing….

Clients buy outcomes, not credentials

An employer filling a permanent role uses a degree as a filter, because they have 200 applicants and twenty minutes. A small business owner hiring help has one specific problem this week and wants it gone by Friday.

They don’t ask what you studied. They ask whether you can sort the inbox, write the email, reconcile the account. Show them you can and the credential question never comes up.

A work sample beats a certificate every time

Put a person with a diploma and no examples next to a person with no diploma and three relevant samples. The second one gets hired. Every time.

Which is good news, because a sample takes an afternoon and a diploma takes years.

“Get qualified first” keeps you spending

Notice who benefits from that advice. Every course telling you you’re not ready yet is selling readiness. Some courses are genuinely worth the money — I’ve paid for ones I’d recommend to you. But the order matters: earn first, then spend some of what you earned on getting better.

Money toward you, before money away from you. Same rule as Monday, wearing a different outfit.

What to do instead

• Name the thing you can already do. Not “I’m organised”. Something like: “I can take a messy inbox to zero and keep it there.”

• Make one piece of proof this week. A document, a sample, a before-and-after. One is enough to start.

• Apply before you feel ready. You will not feel ready. Readiness turns up after the third client, never before the first.

The moment this landed for me wasn’t a job I applied for. It was an invitation that arrived in my LinkedIn inbox for paid specialist work — because I’d spent an evening rewriting my profile to say plainly what I know, instead of listing where I’d been. They sent me an inbox to apply where I answered interview questions. And that was it…..

One caveat, because I promised you honesty.

There are fields where the certificate genuinely is required — regulated bookkeeping in some countries, anything medical, anything legal. If that’s where you’re headed, get the qualification.

For everything else I’ll write about this month, you don’t need one.

What jobs pay well without a degree?

Of the online ones, bookkeeping and specialized admin pay best relative to how hard they are to get into. Writing and virtual assistance start lower but climb faster once you specialize. Be wary of anything advertising very high pay with no requirements at all — that combination is the signature of a scam, not an opportunity.

Does it matter that my degree is from another country?

For freelance and contract work, almost never — the client is buying the work, not validating the institution. It matters far more for permanent employment. If you’re deciding where to spend your energy, put it into samples rather than into getting a qualification recognized.

I’ve been out of work for years. Does that count against me?

For freelance work there’s no gap to explain — there’s only what you can do now. That’s one of the real advantages of contract work over employment, and it’s worth knowing before you spend three weeks agonizing over a CV nobody is going to ask for.

The Eight Checks

1. Did they ask you for money?

Any amount, any reason. Stop here. This one check alone would have caught two of my twelve.

2. Is there a real company behind it?

Search the name plus the word “reviews”. If nothing exists outside their own website, you have your answer.

3. Does the pay make sense?

$50 an hour for data entry with no experience is not a job. It’s bait, and it’s aimed at exactly how much you need this.

4. Did they hire you without checking anything?

Real clients ask for a sample, a test, or a call. Instant hiring means you’re not the one being bought.

5. Is the email address a company address?

A hiring manager at a real company rarely writes from a free personal account.

6. Are they rushing you?

“Only 3 spots left, reply within 24 hours.” Urgency is the oldest tool there is. Real work is still there tomorrow. This one catches the offers that look most professional.

7. Do they want bank details before a contract?

Payment details come after you’re hired and after something is signed. Never during an application.

8. Can you find one real person who did it?

Not a testimonial on their own site. An actual human, in a forum or a group, saying what they got paid.

Eight checks. Clear all eight and it’s probably real. Fail either of the first two and you’re done — close the tab, no second thoughts.

Why this beats “Trust your Gut”

• Your gut is tired. Most of us are doing this at 9pm with one ear on the baby monitor. A list works when you’re exhausted. Instincts don’t.

• It’s short enough to actually use. Advice you won’t follow isn’t advice. Eight minutes fits inside a nap.

• It gives you permission to say yes. That’s the half nobody mentions. A checklist doesn’t only stop you taking bad offers. It lets you take good ones without agonizing for a week first.

Let me tell you about the one that nearly got me, because I don’t want you thinking I’m above this.

It was an online project that looked exactly like the sort of work I actually do. Professional site. Real-sounding company. Then, right at the end of the application, a $35 fee to “access the assessment platform” . I sat there with my card in my hand doing the maths on whether $35 was worth the risk.

Check one would have ended it in four seconds. Check seven too. I wasn’t careless. I was hopeful.

Those two look identical from the inside. That’s the whole reason the list exists.

How do I legally make extra money from home?

Everything in this newsletter is ordinary legal work freelancing, contract work, employment. The fact that “legally” shows up in searches at all tells you how much of what people are being shown feels shady. If a job needs you to hide it, mislead someone, or move money for a stranger, it isn’t a job.

Are the jobs posted in Facebook groups real?

Some are. Groups are also where the highest concentration of fake postings lives, because nobody verifies anything. Use groups to find company names, then go and apply on that company’s own site. Never apply through a DM.

What if I’ve already given someone my details?

Call your bank first and tell them exactly what was shared. They can flag the account. Change any password you reused anywhere. Then report the listing where you found it. This happens to careful, intelligent people constantly. It is not a verdict on your judgement.

So I did.

I picked twelve offers — off job boards, out of Facebook groups, and from the ads that followed me around after one search. I applied to all of them. I replied to the emails, read the terms, and kept notes in a spreadsheet like the nerd I am.

Three were real. Two were straight-up scams. Seven were what I’ve started calling technically true: the work exists, but the pay is so low or so unreliable that calling it income is a stretch.

Here’s what separated them.

Every legitimate offer had the same shape. They wanted a sample, a short test, or a call. One asked me to edit 300 words. One wanted ten minutes on a video call. One asked for two references.

At the time that felt like a hurdle. It’s the signal. Somebody who spends real money wants to know what they’re buying.

If I could point you at one of the three to start with, it would be the admin one. Not because it was the most exciting — because it was the one where nothing I’d done before was wasted. Running a house is running an office with worse funding.

The two scams both wanted money before I earned anything.

One called it a “starter kit”. One called it a “background check fee”. Both were under $50 which is exactly the point.

Small enough that you talk yourself into it.

Write this down, because it’s the only rule you really need: Money flows towards you. Not the other way. Not once. Not for a kit, a fee, a course you must buy to be hired, or a “refundable” deposit.

In all the work I’ve done online, no real employer has ever asked me to pay to start. Not once.

The seven “technically true” ones were the sneakiest

Nobody lied to me. Work existed. But when I did the arithmetic:

• One survey platform came out at about $1.5 an hour once I counted the surveys I got screened out of halfway through.

• Two paid in gift cards. Not money — vouchers, for shops that don’t ship to me.

• Three had no work available in my country at all, which I only discovered after signing up and handing over my details.

• One paid perfectly well, for exactly one month, and then went quiet.

These are the ones that make women give up. Not the obvious scams — those you spot eventually. The ones that quietly eat six weeks and leave you thinking the problem was you.

Why I want you to do a small version of this yourself

• It turns fear into a checklist. “Is this a scam?” is a frightening question with no answer. “Did they ask me for money?” is a question you can answer in four seconds.

• It’s faster than you think. Twelve took me about four evenings. You could do three tonight.

• You stop needing permission. Once you’ve checked a few yourself, you stop waiting for someone else to tell you which list is trustworthy. That’s the actual freedom here.

Here’s the part I didn’t expect. Searching wasn’t the hard bit. Believing the real ones were real — that was the hard bit. I’d been told “if it sounds too good to be true” so many times that a normal, boring, legitimate job offer felt suspicious too.

Don’t let the scammers take that from you as well.

Now, you might be thinking and asking yourself….

Is Amazon work-from-home real or fake?

Real, but much narrower than the ads suggest. Amazon does hire remote customer service and some data roles, and it does not charge you to apply. The ads promising “$3,000 bonuses” and “$1,000 a week” are usually not Amazon at all — they’re third parties borrowing the name. Apply through Amazon’s own jobs site, never through a link in a Facebook ad.

Which app pays real money?

Several do. But “pays real money” and “pays enough to matter” are two different questions. Survey and micro-task apps genuinely pay you; they also genuinely pay very little per hour once you count the screening. Treat them as pocket money while you build a skill, never as the plan.

Why does every list say the same things?

Because most of them are written by people who haven’t done any of them. That’s not me being cynical — it’s why “legit” is one of the most-searched words attached to this whole topic. When you read a list, look for one thing: does the writer say what anything actually paid them?

I tried the 5 a.m. thing. I lasted four days.

Then my toddler started waking at 4:45 because she heard me moving around, and I was more exhausted than when I started.

Hustle culture had an answer for that too: try harder, want it more. That’s when I stopped listening and funny enough, that’s when my work actually started going somewhere.

Here’s what it gets wrong, and what’s true instead….

It measures the Wrong thing

Hustle culture worships hours. More hours, more grind, more proof that you’re serious. But hours aren’t the same as progress.

A mom with 90 focused minutes during nap time can get more done than someone scrolling “productivity” tips for six.

You’re not behind because you work fewer hours. You’re often ahead, because scarce time forces you to skip the busywork everyone else drowns in.

When you only have one clear hour, you don’t spend it color-coding a planner. You do the thing that actually moves the needle, because there’s no time for anything else. Constraint isn’t your weakness here. It’s your edge.

I think about it like packing a diaper bag. When you’ve got all day, you overpack — you throw in things you’ll never use “just in case.”

When you’re running out the door in three minutes, you grab exactly what the baby needs and nothing else. Your work windows are the three-minute version. They force you to carry only what matters. That’s not a lesser way to build a business.

For a lot of us, it’s the only way it ever gets built at all.

It treats your family like the obstacle

The whole message is that your kids, your home, your life are things standing between you and success hurdles to push past at 5 a.m.

But your family isn’t in the way of the business. For most of us, the family is the whole reason for the business.

When you accept that, everything reorders.

• You’re not building despite your kids. You’re building a way to be present for them to earn on your own terms, to not have to ask permission for every school pickup. That’s not a weaker goal than “scale to seven figures.” It’s a clearer one, and it’ll keep you going long after the grind-hustle crowd has burned out and quit.

It sells urgency because urgency sells

Here’s the quiet part. “Grind now or lose forever” makes you anxious, and anxious people buy courses.

The pressure isn’t there because it’s true. It’s there because it works on you. Fear is the most reliable sales tool there is.

You are not running out of time. Freelance skills don’t expire.

The client who’s right for you will still be looking next month, and the month after. Slow and steady genuinely wins this one; the internet just can’t make money selling you “slow,” so it sells you panic instead.

And notice who’s usually selling it.

It’s rarely someone with three kids and a nap schedule. It’s someone whose whole day is free to grind, telling you your day should look like theirs. Of course it can’t. You’re not doing it wrong because your life doesn’t match a stranger’s highlight reel. You’re doing it in the real world, with real people who need you — which is harder than any 5 a.m. montage, and worth a lot more.

What to do instead

• Work in your real windows, not fantasy ones. Nap time, an hour after bedtime, a quiet Saturday morning. Build around the time you actually have, not the 5 a.m. you saw in a video. A plan built on a fake schedule fails the first hard week.

• Measure done, not hours. At the end of the week, ask what you finished — one pitch sent, one profile updated, one client delivered — not how long you sat there. Finished things compound. Hours logged don’t.

• Let it be slow. Earning your first $100, then your first $500, over a few unhurried months is a real business. It counts, even without the 5 a.m. montage. In fact, the slow version is usually the one that’s still standing a year later.

You don’t need to burn out to prove this matters. The moms who last aren’t the ones who grind hardest — they’re the ones who build something that fits their real life.

It’s not. You already have the proof you need — you just haven’t looked at it yet. Most beginners wait to “feel ready” to charge more, and ready never comes. What actually gives you the nerve isn’t a feeling. It’s numbers.

And you’ve been collecting them since your very first job, even if you never wrote them down.

I raised my rate from $15 an hour to $25 last spring, and I didn’t lose a client. Two of them said yes in under an hour. The only reason I had the nerve to ask was that I’d written down three simple numbers first. Before that, I’d quoted $15 for eight months straight — not because it was fair, but because saying a bigger number out loud made my stomach drop.

Let me show you the exact steps I used, so the next time someone asks your rate, you have a real answer instead of a nervous guess.

Step 1: Pull your three “proof numbers”

Start with a note on your phone, before you change a single price.

Write down three things from your last few jobs:

• How fast you got results. “Wrote 4 blog posts in 3 days.” “Cleared a client’s inbox of 200 emails in one afternoon.”

• A result the client cared about. More replies, more sales, hours saved, a launch that went out on time.

Step 3: Raise it on the next new client

You don’t need an awkward conversation with anyone you already work with.

Just set a new number for the next person who asks. When they ask your rate, say it plainly: “My rate is $25 an hour.” No apology, no “but I could do less.” If it helps, add one line of proof: “My last client had 40% more replies after I rewrote their emails.”

That’s it — you’re not asking permission, you’re stating a price backed by results.

For good existing clients, keep it just as simple with a short heads-up: “Starting next month my rate is going to $25 an hour. I’ve loved working with you and wanted to give you plenty of notice.” Most will say fine, because the ones who value your work almost always do.

The first time I saw money in my account that was entirely mine

When the deposit finally came through, it was $63.

I know that’s not a life-changing number.

But I sat with my phone in my hand for a long time, just looking at it.

Not because of the amount — because of what it was.

It was mine. I had made something, and someone had decided it was worth paying for. No one had given it to me. No one had authorized it. I had done work, sent an invoice, and received money for it.

I cried a little. I didn’t expect that.

The guilt nobody warned me about

“Yeah,” I said. “I have a job.” That conversation meant more to me than I expected.

What I’d tell every mom who’s still on the fence

The money landing will feel bigger than the number.

Your first payment doesn’t have to be large to be meaningful. It will mean something entirely separate from its dollar value — something about capability, and proof, and what’s possible for you.

The guilt is normal and it passes. You don’t have to earn the right to spend your own money. It’s yours. That’s the whole point.

And the identity shift is the lasting part. The income can fluctuate. Clients come and go. But “I am someone who earns her own money” — once that’s true, it stays true. Nobody takes it back.

Write a headline that speaks to the client’s problem, not your background

The highest-earning freelancers on Upwork all have one thing in common their headline isn't about them. It's about the client. Most beginners get this backwards.

Here’s is a good example:

“Motivated freelancer looking for opportunities” tells a client nothing about what they’ll get from hiring you.

Instead go straight to the point, what you do and

Step 2: Write a bio that translates your experience into professional language

Clients aren’t hiring your backstory. They’re hiring your ability to deliver something they need. That said — your experience running a household is genuinely relevant. You just need to translate it.

• Managed the household budget for a family of five → bookkeeping, financial tracking, admin

• Coordinated kids’ schedules, appointments, and activities → project coordination, calendar management

• Ran a school volunteer committee → event coordination, communication, team management

• Wrote social content for a local parent group → content creation, social media management

Pick 2–3 of your actual responsibilities and rewrite them the way a job posting would describe them. Then open your bio with your offer — not your history.

Step 3: Add portfolio samples — even if nobody has paid you yet

Here’s the truth: clients can’t tell whether a sample was a paid project or something you made last Tuesday.

They care whether the work is good and relevant — not whether it had an invoice attached. So this week, make one sample. Pick the service you want to offer, pick a fictional client in an industry you understand, and create the deliverable.

Label it clearly: “Sample: Weekly newsletter for a health and wellness coach.” Upload it. That’s your portfolio. One good sample beats a blank section every single time.

Step 4: Set your rate strategically — not at rock bottom

The clients who search for the lowest possible rate are also, almost always, the hardest to work with.

Do this instead:

• Search Upwork for your service category.

• Look at what beginner-to-mid-level freelancers charge — not the top earners, but people with 10–30 reviews.

• Find the middle of that range. Start 10–15% below the middle. Not 50% below. Not at the floor.

You’ll attract better clients. And you’ll have room to raise your rate after your first few jobs without a jarring jump.

Why this works when the typical beginner profile doesn’t

Three things are happening here that most profiles miss.

• First, it speaks the client’s language. Clients scan for a solution to their problem — a profile written from their perspective stops the scroll.

• Second, it removes the “no experience” objection before it comes up. A clear offer plus a relevant sample shows capability, not history.

• Third, it positions you as a professional, not a desperate beginner. A clear headline, a confident bio, and a strategic rate all signal that you take your work seriously — even if you’re just getting started.

Your first Upwork profile doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be clear.

Most beginners either guess too low (and burn out working for $5 an hour without realising it) or

freeze because they don’t know where to start.

So here’s a concrete starting point.

• For a basic social media management package — 3 to 5 posts per week on one or two platforms — beginners typically charge between $200 and $400 per month per client. That’s not per hour. That’s a flat monthly retainer.

• Why a retainer instead of hourly? Because it gives you predictable income, and it gives the client a clear budget. Everyone wins.

• If hourly feels more comfortable to start, $15–$25 is a realistic beginner range. But move to retainers as soon as you can. A retainer doesn’t punish you for getting faster. It fits around school pickup. And it means you know what’s coming in this month — which matters when you’re just starting out.

• One strategy that works: offer your very first client a trial month at a reduced rate — say, $150 — in exchange for a testimonial at the end. That testimonial is worth more than the rate difference.

What to Promise

This is where new freelancers get into trouble.

They say yes to everything in the pitch, then panic when the client asks for things they haven’t figured out yet.

Keep your first package simple. Promise exactly this — and nothing more:

• 3–5 posts per week on 1–2 platforms (start with Instagram or Facebook, not both if you’re brand new)

• Captions written in the client’s voice

• Simple graphics made in Canva (free, and genuinely learnable in a weekend)

• Content scheduled using a free tool like Buffer or Meta’s built-in scheduler

• A basic monthly summary — even just a screenshot of their insights — so the client feels like they’re getting a report

That is a complete, professional service. It’s not flashy. But it’s real, it’s deliverable, and it’s exactly what most small local businesses need.

Before you pitch anyone, write this down in a simple one-page document: here’s what’s included, here’s what isn’t.

It makes you look put-together from day one — and it protects you from scope creep later. (Scope creep is when a client slowly adds more and more to your plate without paying more. A written scope stops that before it starts.)

What to Avoid

Three things that catch beginners out every single time.

• Don’t promise paid ads. Running Facebook or Instagram ad campaigns is a completely different skill set — one that takes time to learn and carries real financial risk for the client if you get it wrong. If a client asks, it’s fine to say: “That’s outside my current package, but I can refer you to someone who specialises in that.” Clients respect honesty about scope. It keeps them longer, not shorter.

• Don’t take on too many clients at once. One or two is a full beginner load. Think about it:

  • 4 posts a week per client, multiplied by two clients, is 8 pieces of content a week to create, write, design, schedule, and track. That’s real work, especially around kids’ schedules. Start with one client. Get your systems down. Then grow.

• Don’t work without a simple written agreement. It doesn’t need to be a legal contract. A one-paragraph email confirming: what’s included, what isn’t, how much, and when payment is due. Send it before you start. This protects you both and sets a professional tone from the very beginning.

Why This Works So Well for Moms

Social media management fits around a mom’s life in a way a lot of freelance services don’t.

• The work is flexible — no set hours, no real-time calls. You can batch an entire week of content ,no client is expecting you to be online and available in real time.

• The tools are mostly free. Canva, Buffer, Meta Business Suite — you can start with zero overhead. That’s not true for a lot of services.

• And the skill is genuinely one you already have. You know how to write a caption that sounds like a real person. You know how to pick a photo that doesn’t look like a stock image from 2009. Small business owners — a local bakery, a boutique, a yoga studio, a real estate agent — often don’t have that instinct, or they don’t have the time. That gap is exactly where you come in.

When I first looked at freelance job listings, I closed the tab within five minutes.

I genuinely didn’t believe I had anything worth selling — I’d been home with my kids for six years and assumed that didn’t count. It took me way too long to realize it counted more than I knew.

The good news is that none of these mistakes are fatal. Every single one has a fix you can put into practice before the week is over.

Here’s what they are — and what to do instead.

Mistake #1: Waiting until everything feels “ready” before you start

This is the one that costs the most time.

• The profile isn’t finished enough.

• The portfolio needs one more piece.

• The bio doesn’t sound right yet.

So you keep tweaking, keep researching, keep watching other people’s YouTube videos about starting — and never actually start.

Here’s the truth: no freelancer felt ready when they sent their first proposal. Not one. Readiness is a feeling, not a milestone you hit after enough preparation.

Here’s how to fix:

• Set a 48-hour rule. Whatever state your profile is in after 48 hours of working on it — it’s done enough to apply.

• Send your first proposal before you feel ready. The feedback from a real application teaches you more in 10 minutes than a week of solo tweaking ever will.

An incomplete profile that applies to jobs is infinitely more useful than a perfect profile that sits there.

Mistake #2: Believing you don’t have any skills worth paying for

This one is so common it might as well be a rite of passage for freelancing moms.

You look at job listings and think: I haven’t worked in years.

I don’t have experience.

I have nothing to offer. And then you close the tab and go back to your life.

But here’s what you’re missing: the skills required to run a household — and run it well — are the same skills businesses pay good money for every single day.

• Coordinating schedules across multiple people = project coordination

• Researching products before you buy = research and data support

• Managing a monthly household budget = bookkeeping or financial admin

• Communicating with schools, doctors, service providers = professional correspondence

• Keeping 4 people’s lives organized = virtual assistant work

Here’s how to fix:

• Before you apply to anything, open your notes app

• Write down 5 things you did before 10am today.

• At least one of them is a freelance service someone is actively hiring for right now.

The skills gap isn’t real. The confidence gap is — and it closes the moment you apply.

Mistake #3: Writing a profile bio that’s about you instead of your client

Open 10 beginner Upwork profiles right now and at least 8 of them start the same way.

“Hi, I’m [Name]. I’m a dedicated stay-at-home mom with a passion for helping people. I’m a hard worker with great attention to detail and I’m eager to learn…”

Clients don’t want to read your story — at least not yet.

They’re scanning profiles trying to solve their own problem. If your opening line doesn’t immediately tell them you can solve it, they’re gone.

Here’s how to fix:

• Lead with the client’s problem, not your background.

• Rewrite your first two sentences using this structure:

“I help [type of client] with [specific problem] so they can [outcome they care about].”

For example: “I help small business owners stay on top of their inboxes, scheduling, and admin — so they can focus on the parts of their business only they can do.”

That’s it. That’s the whole opening. Now the client knows exactly whether you’re for them — and if you are, they’ll keep reading.

Tip: Paste your current bio into Claude and ask it to rewrite the opening to lead with the client’s problem. Takes 2 minutes.

Mistake #4: Sending lots of generic proposals and wondering why nobody replies

The logic feels right: more applications = more chances.

But quantity without specificity produces exactly one outcome , silence.

A generic proposal reads like a form letter. Clients receive dozens of them. They delete them without finishing the first sentence, because nothing in the message proves you actually read their job posting.

Here’s how to fix:

• Apply to 3 specific jobs this week instead of 15 random ones.

• For each one, write a 3-sentence proposal using this formula:

  1. What you noticed about their posting — one detail that proves you read it. “I saw you need someone to manage your Instagram content for a home décor brand — specifically Reels and product flat-lays.”

  2. Why you’re a specific fit — something real, not generic. “I’ve been creating home content for two years and I know which styles perform in that niche.”

  3. One thing you’d do first — show you’ve already started thinking. “My first week would be a simple content audit — seeing what’s worked on your account and what we can build on.”

Short. Specific. Confident.

Share The Kitchen Table Career

Mistake #5: Pricing yourself so low that clients don’t take you seriously

This one hurts to hear, but it’s important.

When you’re starting with no reviews and no experience, the instinct is to price low — sometimes embarrassingly low — to make yourself easy to say yes to.

What actually happens is the opposite. Very low rates trigger doubt in a client’s mind. Why is she charging $3 an hour? What’s wrong with her work?

Price is a signal. And a price that says “I don’t believe in my own work” makes it harder for the client to believe in it either.

How to fix:

• Before you set your rate, spend 20 minutes researching.

  Great for: the best income long-term. Not ideal for: when you’re just starting and have no network yet.

  My honest take: This is the goal. But it takes time. Build your credibility first, then move your best clients off-platform.

  Fiverr first. Get 2–3 reviews. Then explore Upwork. Then build direct clients as your confidence grows. One platform at a time. One step at a time.
