Last week, three different readers asked me the exact same question.
“I’m ready. But where do I go?”
And I get it. The internet has 47 opinions on this. Everyone says something different.
So today I’m going to give you the one honest answer I wish someone had given me when I was starting out.
There is no single “best” platform. There’s only the right platform for where you are right now.
And once you know that? The choice is simple.
Let me break down the three main options — simply and honestly.
Fiverr — Best for Absolute Beginners
How it works: You create a “gig” (like a menu item). Buyers browse and come to you.Great for: visual services, quick tasks, social media, data entry, Canva graphics. Not ideal for: hourly work or long-term projects.
My honest take: Start here. No cold pitching, and your first client can find you within days.
Upwork — Better Once You Have a Couple of Reviews
How it works: Clients post jobs and you send a proposal (a short application). Great for: longer projects, higher rates ($20–$50/hour once established), ongoing relationships. Not ideal for: complete beginners with no reviews yet.
My honest take: Come here after your first 2–3 Fiverr gigs. Once you have one testimonial, Upwork opens up.
Direct Clients — Higher Income Long-Term
How it works: You find clients through social media, referrals, or direct outreach such as cold emails. No platform = no fees.Great for: the best income long-term. Not ideal for: when you’re just starting and have no network yet.
My honest take: This is the goal. But it takes time. Build your credibility first, then move your best clients off-platform.
The Simple Roadmap
Fiverr first. Get 2–3 reviews. Then explore Upwork. Then build direct clients as your confidence grows. One platform at a time. One step at a time.
This Week’s Quick Win

You’re doing research. This is how you learn what your gig should say.
Resource Spotlight
Upwork’s free Skills Certifications (upwork.com/skills/certifications) — Free tests that show up on your profile.
Completing even one makes you look more credible. Takes 20–30 minutes. Shows up next to your name. Costs nothing.
This month I asked: “Where are you on your freelancing journey?”
Here’s what you all said: 42% are still exploring. 28% have set up a profile. 18% have sent a first pitch. 12% have a paying client.
Wherever you are , you’re exactly where you need to be. Keep going.
Forward this issue to a friend who keeps saying “I want to start but I don’t know where to go.” You just found the answer for her. Pass it on.
